Operation Hadin Kai Targets Timbuktu Triangle
The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the death of 22 soldiers and over 70 insurgents during an ongoing military operation in the Timbuktu Triangle, a well-known terrorist enclave in Borno State. The operation, led by troops under Operation Hadin Kai, commenced on January 16, 2025, with a mission to dismantle terrorist strongholds in the region.
Encounters with Insurgents and High-Profile Kills
In a statement issued on Sunday, Maj Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed that the operation has involved multiple engagements with insurgents. Among the neutralized combatants are three high-ranking terrorist commanders:
- Talha – Terrorist Special Forces Commander
- Mallam Umar – Terrorist Operations Commander
- Abu Yazeed – Terrorist Brigade Commander
Buba stated, “Troops recorded several encounters with terrorists during the clearance operations, resulting in over 70 insurgents, including three key commanders, being neutralized.”
Terrorist Tactics and Troops’ Resilience
The insurgents employed various dangerous tactics, such as using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), suicide bombers, and drones to counter the military’s advancement. However, the troops demonstrated tactical superiority, successfully repelling these threats.
Buba explained, “The terrorists deployed Person-Borne IEDs (suicide bombers), Vehicle-Borne IEDs, and even amateur drones during the operation. Troops, already familiar with these tactics, effectively thwarted their attempts, including shooting down several drones.”
Casualties and Media Restraint
While the operation has achieved significant success, it has not been without losses. The Defence Headquarters reported that 22 soldiers were killed in action, and several others sustained injuries.
Maj Gen. Buba urged the media to exercise restraint in publishing the names of fallen troops to allow formal notification of their families. He said, “We appeal to the media to refrain from releasing the names of deceased soldiers to ensure their next of kin are informed appropriately.”
Operation Progresses
The three-pronged operation in the Timbuktu Triangle is ongoing as troops continue their efforts to eliminate terrorist enclaves and restore peace to the region.
