Ruling Party Labels Opposition Trio as Desperate “Rent-Seekers” Clinging to Lost Power

In a fiery political face-off, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has slammed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, labeling them as “desperate, displaced rent-seekers” after the trio accused President Bola Tinubu of weaponizing poverty in Nigeria.
The accusation, made during Amaechi’s 60th birthday event in Abuja, sparked a heated rebuttal from APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, who called the remarks a shameless attempt by former political elites to regain power and relevance.
“Instead of celebrating a birthday, they showcased a frenzy of desperation for power,” Morka declared in a press statement released Monday morning.
“After 24 years of controlling Nigeria’s political machinery, they failed to reduce poverty and now criticize the man cleaning up their mess.”
🔎 APC’s Counterattack: “They Thrived on a Broken System”
Morka outlined how Atiku, Amaechi, and El-Rufai held critical national positions between 1999 and 2023, yet allegedly did little to address Nigeria’s structural economic problems.
“They sold national assets to cronies, wasted public funds, and oppressed their people. Now, deprived of state resources, they rage against reforms designed to end their gravy train,” Morka asserted.
Citing Amaechi’s now viral “I am hungry” comment, Morka added:
“That hunger is not about food—it’s a hunger for lost patronage. For someone who spent 24 uninterrupted years in power, that’s a damning admission.”
💼 Defending Tinubu’s Reforms: “Breaking the Chains of Rent-Seeking”
APC emphasized that Tinubu’s economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy and exchange rate unification, are dismantling the old corrupt order that benefited the opposition leaders.
“While rent-seekers complain, Nigerian entrepreneurs, farmers, and manufacturers are thriving. Trade surpluses are up, local production is booming, and minimum wage has more than doubled to ₦70,000,” Morka stated.
The ruling party also credited Tinubu with delivering the highest GDP growth (4.6%) in a decade, despite global oil price challenges.

Drawing a direct line between Atiku and Obi’s past business interests and the flawed import-dependent economy, APC accused them of “masquerading personal loss as public concern.”
“Atiku, a former customs officer, and Obi, an importer, profited from a system they now pretend to oppose. Tinubu’s policies threaten that system—and that’s why they are panicking,” the party stated.

Morka concluded by assuring Nigerians that Tinubu’s reforms are creating “a resilient and self-sustaining economy”—and warned against returning power to those he described as “hardened political opportunists.”
“The days of reckless plunder are over. President Tinubu is building an economy that rewards hard work, innovation, and productivity—not political entitlement.”
