The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed that the Federal Government of Nigeria is prepared to receive its citizens who may be deported from the United States of America
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Takes Charge
According to Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the Director of Media and Corporate Affairs at NiDCOM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is responsible for overseeing such matters. In an interview with Vanguard on Tuesday evening, Balogun disclosed that an inter-agency committee has been established to manage any mass deportation of Nigerians from the U.S.
Inter-Agency Committee Setup
To handle potential deportations, the Federal Government has formed a specialized committee. This committee comprises representatives from:
- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM)
- The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs
- The Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA)
U.S. Deportation Data
A document compiled by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), specifically its Enforcement and Removal Operations division, provides insight into the number of non-citizens facing deportation. The document, reviewed by Vanguard on Tuesday, breaks down data by nationality.
As of November 24, 2024, there are 1,445,549 non-citizens on ICE’s non-detained docket who have received final orders of removal. The countries with the highest number of deportation cases include:
- Mexico – 252,044 individuals
- El Salvador – 203,822 individuals
ICE’s Role in Immigration Control
The ICE is tasked with safeguarding the United States from illegal immigration and cross-border crimes that pose threats to national security. Its operations include identifying, arresting, and deporting non-citizens without legal status.
Mass Deportation Operations Begin
Last Thursday, U.S. authorities initiated a large-scale deportation operation. Hundreds of migrants were arrested, while others were flown out of the country using military aircraft. This development aligns with former U.S. President Donald Trump’s previously announced plans to intensify deportation measures.
