Obasa Returns as Speaker

Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda. Meranda stepped down from the role immediately, paving the way for Obasa’s return during Monday’s plenary session.

Background of Obasa’s Impeachment

Earlier in January, Obasa was impeached by the lawmakers over various allegations, including poor leadership, high-handedness, habitual lateness to plenary sessions, abuse of office, and intimidation of colleagues. His removal was supported by over 90% of the Assembly members.

Obasa’s Reaction to His Removal

Following his impeachment, Obasa rejected the process, arguing that due constitutional procedures were not followed. He also refuted allegations of financial misconduct, stating that such misappropriations were “impossible.” He insisted that he remained the Speaker until a proper removal process was executed.

Political Intervention and Reconciliation

To resolve the leadership crisis, prominent members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including former governors Bisi Akande (Osun), Segun Osoba (Ogun), and Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), intervened under the directive of President Bola Tinubu. After a reconciliation meeting on Monday, Meranda and other top principal executives tendered their resignations.

Obasa’s Message to Lawmakers and Lagosians

Following his reinstatement, Obasa expressed gratitude to his colleagues and called for unity among lawmakers. He assured Lagosians that their interests would always be prioritized.

“Our primary responsibility is to represent and serve Lagosians, and that is exactly what we have been doing,” he stated.

He further emphasized the Assembly’s ability to resolve internal conflicts, describing it as a House of integrity with strong internal mechanisms. He concluded by expressing optimism for continued cooperation among lawmakers in a spirit of peace, love, and harmony.
