Nigeria, the three-time African champions, finds itself in a tricky Group C for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, scheduled to take place in Morocco. The Super Eagles will face Tunisia, along with Uganda and Tanzania—two of the co-hosts for the 2027 edition.
Tournament Draw and Schedule
The group stage draw was conducted on Monday in Morocco, with the tournament set to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. Group C promises to be competitive, with Nigeria being the most successful team in the group.
Nigeria’s Rich AFCON History
The Super Eagles boast an illustrious AFCON record, having claimed the title three times (1980, 1994, 2013). They are also the competition’s record medalists, with 16 podium finishes in their 20 appearances, including five runner-up finishes and eight bronze medals. Despite their strong history, Nigeria will be looking to bounce back after losing the 2023 final 2-1 to Ivory Coast.
Group Rivals
Tanzania: Relative newcomers, Tanzania have only featured in the tournament three times.
Tunisia: The most familiar opponent in the group, Tunisia eliminated Nigeria in the round of 16 during the 2021 tournament in Cameroon. Tunisia has one AFCON title, won on home soil in 2004, and has made 21 appearances in the competition.
Uganda: Making their eighth AFCON appearance, Uganda will look to challenge Nigeria in Group C.
Tanzania: Relative newcomers, Tanzania have only featured in the tournament three times.

AFCON 2025 Host Cities and Stadiums
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Moroccan Football Federation have announced six cities and nine stadiums that will host the tournament.
- Rabat: Features four stadiums, including Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah (69,500 capacity) and three others with capacities ranging from 18,000 to 22,000.
- Casablanca: Complexe Sportif Mohammed V (45,000 capacity).
- Agadir: Grand Stade d’Agadir (41,144 capacity).
- Marrakech: Grand Stade de Marrakech (41,245 capacity).
- Fes: Complexe Sportif de Fès (35,468 capacity).
- Tangier: Grand Stade de Tanger, the largest stadium, with a capacity of 75,000.
