President Mourns Victims of Enugu Tanker Tragedy
President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the government and people of Enugu State following the tragic fuel tanker explosion that occurred on Saturday. The incident, which happened on the Ugwu-Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, claimed several lives and left others injured.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families and those recovering from injuries. He prayed for the repose of the deceased and the speedy recovery of the injured.
Tanker Explosion Claims Multiple Lives
According to reports, the tanker lost control while navigating the expressway, leading to a devastating explosion. While the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported 11 casualties, other sources indicated that 18 people lost their lives, with many others hospitalized.
This tragedy follows a similar incident in Niger State just days earlier, where over 80 lives were lost in another fuel tanker explosion.
Call for Enhanced Road Safety Measures
President Tinubu highlighted the need for caution among road users, particularly fuel tanker operators, and urged strict adherence to safety protocols. To prevent such incidents in the future, he directed traffic enforcement agencies to implement additional measures aimed at improving road safety nationwide.
Benjamin Kalu Urges Immediate Action on Road Safety
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, also expressed his condolences to the families affected by the Enugu explosion. In a statement issued by his Special Assistant, Print Affairs, Udora Orizu, Kalu mourned the victims and called for urgent steps to prioritize the safety of lives.
“I’m deeply saddened by the news of the tanker explosion in Enugu State, which claimed many lives and left others injured. This horrific tragedy comes just days after a similar incident in Niger State, where over 80 people were killed,” he said.
Appeal for Road Rehabilitation and Public Awareness
Kalu urged the Federal Government to take immediate action to address the poor state of roads, particularly the 9th Mile Expressway. He also called for public education and the implementation of safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
“It’s one death too many,” he lamented. “We must act now to protect ourselves. Improving road conditions, enforcing safety measures, and educating citizens are critical steps to avoiding such tragedies in the future.”
A Nationwide Responsibility
As condolences continue to pour in for the victims, the call for improved road safety, stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, and enhanced public awareness grows louder. Both the President and the Deputy Speaker have pledged to support efforts aimed at preventing such devastating incidents in the future.
